Macaw Parrots
Parrots are almost always the top choice for many bird lovers to take as a pet. Macaw parrots in particular are well liked due to their vibrant coloring and high level of intelligence. These birds are known to spend a lot of time in groups of the same species. Macaw parrots are, unfortunately on the list of endangered species.
The main features of Macaw parrots are the strong beaks and dazzlingly vibrant plumage that comes in green, blue and red. They make a distinct squawking sound as well. Macaw parrots make a lot of use form their claws that are able to grip and grasp very well. Macaw parrots are naturally found in Mexico and other countries of Central and South America. Rainforests, grasslands and forest along rivers are the natural habitat for these beautiful birds.
Macaw parrots come in a variety of subspecies of different sizes. The largest of Macaws are the Hyacinth Macaws that posses an impressive wingspan of almost four feet. The smallest are the red shouldered Macaws that weigh only 5 ounces. In the wild, Macaw parrots are known to have a lifespan of over 50 years and often mate for life. Unfortunately, the pet trade has lead to a vast decline of Macaw parrots in the wild. Due to their attractive plumage and intelligence, most people seek Macaws to make great pets. But as long as the interest and demand for these birds remain at high levels, Macaw parrots will continue to be bred by pet retailers.
In order to care for Macaw parrots, the first factor to be informed about is the diet. Macaws will thrive on a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and sprouting seeds. Rather than processed bird food, organic and natural food will keep the birds healthy and happy. To make sure that they do not develop any diseases or become victims of infections, it is necessary to keep the food and water trays clean at all times.
Just like every other species of parrot, Macaw parrots also need a certain amount of interaction to keep them content. They could be wonderful companions for people as the parrots love company more than anything else. If, however, left alone, ignored or unspoken to extended periods of time, they could develop aggressive behavior and retreat from the owner due to lack of trust. Therefore, the building of trust is important when rearing intelligent birds such as Macaws.
Macaws possess small air passages that may become clogged with foreign material such as dust and dirt. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the indoor air purified to make sure that the birds don’t develop respiratory diseases that may become fatal. It is also necessary to place the cage well away from the kitchen which may emit fumes that are toxic to them.
